I definitely think managers have a big role in retention, but it’s not all on them. Factors like pay and company policies can be out of their control. That said, a good manager can make a huge difference in creating a positive work environment and keeping people motivated.

Totally agree! A great manager can really influence the day-to-day experience, even if they can't control everything. Having someone who supports and advocates for you can make all the difference.
I think there's a lot of truth to the statement about people fleeing bad managers. I don't know if there's any way to quantify it, but just from anecdotal evidence it seems that a lot of people do move on because management is viewed as a problem. But that's not always the case, of course. I once left a job and I'd say problematic management was maybe 60 percent of the problem. As for the retention side of it, I think managers should always be aware of that. But the ones who drive people away are usually not self-aware enough to realize that's happening.

That’s so true. A lot of managers who contribute to turnover often don’t realize (or admit) they’re part of the problem. And while management is a big factor, it’s rarely the whole story. sometimes it’s just time for a change.
I agree with you. It definitely isn't always on the manager but I do think that managers can play a large part in employee retention. However it has to be more than just the manager that is responsible for that. When the culture sucks somewhere the manager can't always do anything to change it and people end up leaving.
