Yeah of course. I didn't start out as a copywriter but I was in general web marketing before I moved to product marketing. I think it can be a really successful pivot for people who are really strategy minded and like thinking big picture. Those are the big differences for me
With a copywriting background, you’d bring strong writing skills, which is valuable, but product marketing goes beyond just writing about the product. Product marketers are responsible for positioning, messaging, launching products, and working closely with sales and product teams to deeply understand the product and market. They need to translate technical details into customer benefits, create sales enablement materials, and develop go-to-market strategies—not just craft compelling copy.
So, while your copywriting skills are a great foundation, product marketing is more strategic and cross-functional, involving a lot of collaboration and a deeper dive into the product and its audience
I mean it would depends what other skills they have. Product marketing does require copywriting but you also need to be able to read and understand user data, strategy, product positioning, customer profiles, etc.
On the creative side I think so. There’s a lot of creativity that goes into product marketing so I wouldn’t rule you out. I’d be nervous about making a career change right now, but if you feel passionate about it, you can try.
