Does anyone actually enjoy audit anymore? Not just tolerate it or feel it’s “safe" - I mean genuinely enjoy the day-to-day. Personally, I don’t. Between ever-changing templates, endless documentation, and SAS 145 making everything more complicated, it’s hard to find meaning in the work. If you do enjoy it, what do you enjoy about it? And if not, are you trying to pivot?

Agree! Hate it! If there was fraud we would probably miss it…spending all this time with endless questionnaires and documentation…taking away from really understanding the business and transactions and understanding revenue streams and how other accounting rules apply.

No I don’t enjoy it. The deadlines are all over and it’s never ending. Sometimes I wish I did tax because the deadlines are hard deadlines and the rest of the year is predictable.

Also it feels harder to find adequate attest associates because you need to know so much more to fully understand how to do an audit engagement compared to tax.

I'm with you. Far too many requirements to fill out forms and reports that don't actually add value or help improve processes.

Sitting in my first accounting class in 8th grade… I thought “accounting” was great as we worked on a practice set…writing checks to pay invoices and in 10th grade we prepared tax returns…seemed awesome at the time.

Audit is just a salary/job safety net. I go to it when there is uncertainty in the industry.

like

Heeeelll no. I feel like 90% of people just do it because of the job safety & it’s a somewhat decently paid job. There’s not a day that I miss audit

Never enjoyed it.

It was just a job for me until something better came along—and it finally did a couple months ago.

At the end of the day, auditors are glorified professional double checkers and babysitters looking to daylight as “consultants”.

As the years have gone by, I’ve noticed that workload and quality of work provided by the clients have deteriorated significantly.

I enjoy it but I work for State government auditing grant recipients for grant compliance. The awardees see me as less of the enemy than may be the case in the private sector (we are giving them tons of money) but I struggle with being the "enemy" of the programmatic review side of grants. The dilemma for me is that I represent a "pass-through" entity, awarding the funds while also auditing for compliance. We don't want the feds to be mad that we're finding non-compliance in the awards we gave but also need to find non-compliance to protect my agency. Programmatic staff wants all thumbs-up and smiles. Creates a bit of a moral dilemma.
