Hello!
I finished my final round(s) for a TAM position at Google (GCP) last week and was told by my recruiter that my feedback was great and that I made a solid impression on the team and am "firmly in the running". I was supposed to hear back this week (according to the recruiter) but he just told me that it's still in the process and that I'll have to wait for another week or so.
Is this common at Google ? I have heard they are notorious for being really slow with their hiring process.
Personally I think its not that straightforward. Being in the tech industry, our perception of salary is very skewed right as a result of how people love to inflate their salary when self reporting. That being said, in my experience I've found it best to either throw them an unrealistic number if they ask what my salary expectations are (if I don't care about the company) or decline to answer and then negotiate when there's an offer on the table. Take this as anecdote, but I've found that once there's an offer at hand you go from being in a position from convincing your potential employer in letting you work for them to them having to convince you so you have a lot more leverage.
I don’t think it’s a bad idea to ask about a salary range early on in the process. Expect that you’ll get a vague, slightly evasive answer — but try your best to get *some idea* even if not a specific number.
e.g., if you’re looking for $150K and that’s the top end of their range, then that tells you something.
