Meh I don’t really look at work as something that I need to find interesting, it’s a necessary step in funding the things/hobbies in life that I enjoy
I feel the same… I think it’s the nature of consulting and the way clients treat us like we’re disposable.
If clients treat you like you’re disposable you’re doing consulting wrong. Maybe reflect on why your client relationships are not strong… once you have that foundation clients will find interesting work to keep you around
Find impactful work, Im in sustainability consulting. I might be a corporate drone but I at least feel like my work is meaningful and making some sort of positive impact on the world, and that motivates me.
Exactly the same for me - great place to be in and can’t see myself doing ‘normal’ consulting work anymore
For me it's more so I no longer care because I get so little rest. We're working so much all day everyday. it feels like outside of basic human needs every other second with your eyes open you're working or thinking about work. Consulting is a pretty emotionally exhausting job and when you're emotionally exhausted you can't care rats ass about whether or not you're changing a states education system for the better to help kids or pushing the bleeding edge of the newest technological strategies etc.
So not sure I have a right to answer in the ‘Young Consultant’ bowl as I’m an old jaded consultant these days but I’ll throw in my opinion for good measure:
- lots of projects I worked on were boring and I hated what I was actually doing on a daily basis
- I have also been lucky to work on a number of blue ribbon industry projects which (when I look back on at least) I am very proud of though at the time I’m sure I was in the depths of despair at points
- I never achieved the zenith of one of the other posters above where I only worked on projects I liked however I did manage to keep my projects aligned to an industry (not necessarily the one I would have got most satisfaction from) where I could see an opportunity to become Partner and so whilst not always loving the project I at least had the benefit that it was aligned to something bigger I was trying to achieve
- the big lesson I learned in consulting is that if you really want to progress in consulting you have to find some way to care… I don’t mean loving every engagement or project you’re on but the people that progress in my world (and I’ve observed through my career) are almost always the people who care and take personal ownership to make sure the job gets done.
None of the above may be of any use to you and it’s my perspective… I sometimes wonder whether I should have chased something that made me happy every day and I ‘care’ about (thinking of the panacea where it doesn’t feel like a job) but ultimately the decision I made was the best one financially. However if you intend to stay in consulting then I would advise you to find a way to ‘care’ not because it makes every day feel like a holiday but because you’ll need it if you want to progress - i say this feeling tired and burned and no consulting evangelical!
I definitely do not care at all
Feeling the same. Just under 4 years and bored out my mind. It dawned on that on each of the clients I’ve consulted for I wouldn’t apply there for a job yet there I am working for them lol.
Trying to exit into corporate strat roles and into something I care about!
I do! I only work on projects I find intellectually stimulating and personally exciting
Do tons of aerospace/defense work, and currently on a healthcare provider case. I’ve been lucky to see and do a lot of really cool stuff in each
Good to know I'm not alone. Working on the most useless, non-impactful stuff ever in my career. Could absolutely care less about any of it. And the client shouldn't either honestly. They are focused on all the wrong things.
OP, what kind of consulting do you do? Strategy and Operations ?
Data & analytics for financial companies
I certainly don’t lol
Which question are you answering ? OP asked one in the beginning and one at the end of the paragraph.
I care, but client makes me not want to care
In the same exact boat… answer is new job I fear
