Journalism has been dying since the invent of the internet and blogs. Newspapers are all but extinct, magazines are slowly dying. They have to charge so much, that no one wants to buy them anymore. Have you seen that some cost nearly $20 now? They used to be only a dollar or two. And with the advancements of AI, that's going to take even more journalism jobs.
Absolutely. Biased reporting and sensationalizing news has always been a part of the media to some degree. But I feel like we are going beyond what we’ve seen in the past. It’s so hard to find journalists who accurately give the whole picture. And so ironic how easy it would be to find the info, but that’s not what these places want.
I disagree, talking heads on TV are not journalists. They can be biased in the name of discussions and ratings. However, a true journalist works very hard to print the truth and must have sources and validation. For sure jobs are limited but without journalism who tells the story?
I see it not being as prevalent as it once was, but I believe that's due to the variety of mediums journalism is offered on now. I still see journalism growing online, especially for web site only news. It's definitely a changing field in terms of what experience they're looking for in journalists before hiring them.
I'm not that old, but I well remember when any city of any size had two daily newspapers and many rural communities had at least two weeklies. First to die were the afternoon editions, which were usually "merged" with the morning daily. So many community daily newspapers were "Gannett-ized" into little more than a few wire stories to fill a few small spaces on pages not filled by ads. Local news is almost non-existent. When i started in this profession people were saying print journalism was an endangered species. I didn't believe it. I'm afraid they were right. Local newspapers are probably in their last generation. Online news sites may last a while longer.
It is a reflection of what is going on in the rest of our important society including the U.S. military, either due to the baby boomers aging out and retiring, or simply because there is a necessary but painful paradigm shift that dictates the disturbing trend of compliance the order as if Risk Management, Accounting, and Marketing have the journalists and editors I have talked to practically by the throat and are being systemic in their disabling of the fairness and inclusive coverage that is basically basic honest journalism, like it's a thing of the past. God help us.
