You are making me look bad, man. I’m trying to muster the courage to do a 15 min task since morning
Everyday write and maintain a TODO list.
Literally lists. That overwhelmed feeling I find mainly comes when thoughts are unorganised and not prioritised. Just list everything down on a paper, making it tangible (literally), and you’ll calm down and get it done.
And that crossing off feeling is amazing too
Adderall
I get that all the time! In order to get over it, I have to break down my tasks into little 15 minute chunks to make it feel attainable and feasible. That helps me calm down and start it. Just take it one 15 minute block at a time. let yourself have a minute or two to grab a coffee after one. or take a walk after a few. It’ll prevent the burnout.
Basically, this.
I have a daily planner, and every night I write down everything that I need to do (work, personal, etc) the next day...literally everything, including workout, pick-up RX, grocery, etc. (of course, I also add to the list in the AM and throughout the day). Anything that I don’t finish one day goes to the top of the list for the next day. If something must be completed that day, then I highlight it on my list. Makes it easy for me to know exactly what I have to do on a given day as soon as I wake up/get to my desk. For work projects where I don’t know where to start, I sit down and write out the large steps that I think it will require, then I add in some details/steps I’ll need to take for each of the larger steps. Then the small steps within the larger first step become the first items on my to-do list. Also, Adderall is a miracle drug.
I use the Simplified Planner by Emily Ley, and I love it!! Super clean/simple layout and doesn’t have extraneous fields. They come calendar year or academic year, and they also have some that are leather-bound (vs coil-bound) for a more professional look
I’m a huge fan of making lists but capping them with 5-7 tasks. Making an overwhelming list is not helpful for me.
Here’s the key: when it’s time to tackle the to-do list, turn off your email.
That’s what helps.
I also meditate before bed for about 10 minutes to help the ever-growing list from messing up my sleep. That’s been huge for me over the past 12 months.
Just keep grinding away and don’t distract yourself when you’re in the middle of something. Find efficiencies where possible and of course, find ways to avoid unnecessary time-consuming tasks that aren’t an urgent task. Prioritize your work streams so you know what’s most critical and focus on that first versus bouncing between tasks.
Make a list, deep breathes, go for a walk to clear your head (time permits).
The best advice I gotten is “ go slow, to go fast”. Take your time with the task. Do your work in a methodical manner. For me, it keeps me on task and focused, because I get into a weird vicious cycle where I psyche myself out because I keep on watching the clock to flip deliver work. Don’t know if that makes sense but it’s a way I steady myself when against the clock or have a long list.
At the end of the day, you just gotta grind shit through.
Also highly recommend looking into the Getting Things Done method... I don’t follow it to a T, but I read about it in college (in Willpower by Baumeister & Tierney — Ch. 3), and it really helped me learn how to approach my to-do list, organize my priorities, etc. to be more productive and less stressed
Everyday of my life. Meditation, make a list of what needs done and go down the line. What you couldn’t fit in, push into tomorrow and plan your day. Most important, get sleep where you can. Hope this helps.
