Does anyone feel like they have to temper their tone or choose their language carefully when disciplining subordinates? I am worried about coming off as too aggressive or difficult to work for, which is frustrating because the men in leadership positions at my company certainly don't pull their punches when handling their direct reports. #whm

I do choose my words carefully. Radical candor helped me with this and knowing what to say and how to say it. It’s a practice

I think a mindset shift from “disciplining subordinates “ to “coaching my team” would set a better tone and probably have better results.

It also depends on the team member. Different people accept criticism differently, I always try to approach in a method that will be received well. Direct and clear but kind.

Switch your mindset to coach rather than disciplined. Think of subordinates as your kids, and teach them so that they grow and forget bad habits.

Sub ordinates are employee should get the respect they need. We should learn to handle all employee without losing nature of manager , seniority and it’s not about being rude, it’s about how you handle any employee with different mindset !
All employee add value to organization and not everyone are of same type, mindset . I think being managers all should gets have little knowledge on psychology to understand each of there associates and handle based on there personality type.

IDK, the idea of “disciplining” anyone sounds like the wrong approach already. Make sure feedback is continuous. Set expectations. Discuss progress regularly.

pretty sure you are seeking to be intentionally obtuse to make a point, it is uninteresting. ta ta.

Single black female. Late 30s, no kids. Is it better to practice in a smaller market that’s close to major cities, lots of professional opportunities, but no real single professional scene? OR be in a bigger pond/major city with more professional and networking opportunities, oversaturated with lawyers of color, more competition for professional opportunities, but bigger dating pool?

Have you been fired before even starting your new job?

I signed for a new job two months ago and will start next month (3 mo notice period in Europe). They were very keen on getting me on-board ASAP before signing but since I signed the contract it has been silent from the new employee. I've emailed them with questions as I'll be re-locating to NL and it takes them 1-2 weeks to reply. Given all that's going on in the world, I'm worried they might fire me before I even start.

How did you give notice you were lateraling to people you like? Particularly if you haven't been there that long?

I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬

Got braids. You'd think I literally got a face transplant from how shook my coworkers are. I would say over 10 people have stopped me to ask about them or comment on them and I've been at work for maybe 2 1/2 hours. It's all been positive, but am I wrong for still finding it annoying? They don't lose their minds when Sarah gets bangs or whatever so I wish they could keep that same energy.

The hostility on my team is rough. We have a yeller. I walked by her room the other day. She was screaming across the room at a student, "you have to be kind to get kindness." Seriously, those were her words in a loud, berating, angry tone. Our admin has asked that we not report these. We are to talk to the teacher. She has yelled at me and other adults. Admin has to know she treats the kids this way too. One teacher has to work with her door closed to not hear the yelling all day.

How do I be a decent manager to a coworker who's upset I've been promoted twice in two years and they haven't? We started out as coworkers, became decent friends after a few good moments, but went back to simply coworkers after they flubbed a few projects and I had to step in to clean up. I'm non-confrontational but year-end reviews are right around the corner and I'm worried about having to act professional to someone who I got too close with and who now hates me.
