Does anyone here do ONLY low intensity workouts (yoga, pilates, etc)? Do you feel like your exercise routine is complete with only yoga or do you typically complement it with other exercise? Do you ever feel the need to sweat things out (like cardio)?

Lately I haven’t felt like my usual HIIT classes and I’ve only been craving yoga. So I’m curious about other fitness lifestyles. Im a little chubby and a bit “scared” of dropping cardio completely

I quit doing orange theory a few years ago…started doing classical Reformer Pilates classes 4x/week plus walking on treadmill like 30 mins a day….i lost 10 lbs with limited effort. My inflammation went down, my appetite went down…I like how I look way better than when I was killing myself in the gym. (I was pretty lean to begin with and lost weight effortlessly with this switch).

^exact same scenario for me. I eat way less now because I’m not thinking about fueling up for grueling OTF classes (which I kinda dreaded). Now I do reformer Pilates 2x a week, weight lifting 2-3x a week, and 10-12k steps pretty much every day. I live in a city so that makes it easier. I’ll do a peleton bike ride or run every week or so just to keep my heart healthy but otherwise very limited cardio!

I think you should do what you enjoy! That said, there are proven benefits to incorporating strength training several times a week into your routine. We lose muscle as we age and that prevents that process; plus it keeps your body strong and healthy and improves body composition. If you like cardio too, feel free to incorporate it but just know that it’s not “necessary” to do HIIT training vs something more low impact like walking, which you should be doing anyway (10K a day). Walking is essential and those 10K steps a day should be a non-negotiable. If you’re struggling with your weight / body composition I would suggest 10K steps a day, 3+ strength training sessions a week and do what you like for exercise the 2 other days, with 2 days of rest where you still hit your steps.

Weight loss is also from your diet not your workouts; workouts just determine your body composition and strength. So I would suggest tracking your macros and ensuring you’re in a caloric deficit every day if your goal is weight loss, and also hitting 1g of protein per day for every lb you weigh, which will help your satiety and aid in lean muscle mass.

Based on your comments, I agree with you that you should focus on enjoying your fitness journey. I do a mix of pilates, barre, and swimming at the gym. At home, I focus more on strength training sets because I want to be stronger (lunges, push-ups, elevated shoulder taps mostly). Do what feels good and consider making it more challenging down the line, if you feel up for it

What’s your goal? If you’re trying to get strong or build cardiovascular fitness, that’s probably not going to do it, but if you’re trying to improve flexibility and mobility and de-stress it is good.

Try 3x week pilates (or whatever you can afford) + walking daily for like 3 months and take progress pics…I swear you will lose fat bc your appetite will suppress.

I have added walking to my usual weightlifting as I am in a phase of trying to just maintain muscle and lose fat and it is great. It feels good without depleting me and it makes my diet much more effective but without making me ravenous.

Same! I got a cheap, used walking pad and getting 10k steps is easy with my standing desk. It really helps with weight loss. I also started actually tracking my food in myfitnesspal to get a better idea of serving sizes and what I am putting into my body.

The best workout is the one you will stick with. Do what you want, push yourself in ways that you want. Over time a desire to do more intense exercises will come, but don't do it because someone said it is the "right" way. There is no "right" way to exercise. Exercise should be enjoyable, not some competitive drudgery.
