Combined gives the employee more power if it is the same amount of time and minimizes the company's cost to process it. So if one company gives 10 days of PTO and 10 sick days and another gives 20 days combined the second company would be better for the employee. Also sometimes sick time only pays like 75 percent and PTO pays full amount so better for the employee.
Ive had both. I find orgs that offer sick time do not offer less pto, or not significant.
My view is everyone has a year or two where they are out sick a lot. Its thise years where the sick time makes a big difference, just as you're hurting the most. I think more companies should offer sick time for that reason and nothing will change my mind
I haven’t noticed a difference in my own experience between two different buckets and one PTO bucket. I think the PTO model is more flexible and more honest. This is your time. Use it however you want or need.
When there are two buckets most employees find a way to use 100% of the sick time, so it doesn’t really benefit the employer to separate them. It just makes for more unplanned occurrences.
