You can try to start as a medical secretary or assistant office manager and work your way up. Or try for a small practice first.
You can try to get through a agency and do contract work and usually and the end of your contract they will offer a full time position if they liked your work performance
Make sure you are sending a great cover letter too that highlights the experience you have as an MA that matches the skills they are looking for in their job description. If you haven’t already- get a resume review from a professional.
Was your MA experience more back office or front office?
My company for example looks for strong admin experience and prefer some leadership/supervisor experience in a Practice Manager. Maybe you could find a stepping stone position as a lead or supervisor first?
Best of luck to you!
I suggest making sure that your résumé highlights transferable skills. If you’ve been an MA for a while, I’m sure you have had to train someone at some point.
I would consider looking for any individual contributor positions such as a project coordinator, quality management improvement specialist or program specialist in various organizations. You need to gain visibility to help you land that type of role in most cases. The first leadership role is often the most challenging to secure, but keep navigating through and you’ll be fine!
If you are currently employed while finishing your degree, try and find new ways to make an impact at your practice that show leadership or guidance qualities.... employee manual or an "answer" binder to help get all employees on track with common practices, propose cost effective ways to increase employee retention, benefits, etc. Communicate with your supervisors about taking on a more leadership role. Lead MA? Peer or New employee advisor?
I'm in the same boat. Medical assistant for 12 years at one of the top 10 healthcare organizations in the country. Alot of healthcare experience. Graduated with a dual bachelors in healthcare management and HROM. 600 applications later I'm still looking.
Try looking for supervisor positions in the healthcare field… It sometimes takes a while but eventually someone will give you a shot. Network with people in local hospitals and try doctors offices and medical groups for a lead position.
