Doing background check at KPMG and they dinged me on role name. Basically my title is different from their internal classification. Freaking out a little. Anyone experience this?KPMG

Happens. EYP calls SM a Senior Director but when you get a reference letter it says Senior Manager. Just had to explain to HR it’s a market facing title. PITA but no biggie.

like

Yes! Same thing happened to me. At big companies in Industry it’s common for HR to have a generic drop down menu but your boss and business have a more specific title. I answer the question on my background as one was HR system and the other was what I actually did.
Example. Director of Finance. Vs Director of Finance for Sales, Marketing, IT and Operations. Everyone thought the 3rd party who dinged me was smoking something. Just move on. I think they get paid to find any discrepancy. If it’s logical then it’s not an issue.

This happened to me and I just replied with “ah, semantics on we referred to title internally, but one can see how they’re the same, right? If you’d like to discuss in detail happy to do so.”

Still got the job.

Had the background check done by HireRights recently for a consulting gig. I became an Independent Consultant via my LLC in Jan. These offshore guy went circles and tried to verify my self-employment status. I have SoW, invoices and payment receipts. I can have whatever title that I want becauseI am the boss and HR. Such a pain if you are not a W2 employee. Make sure your job titles and dates match among your resume, info you put on background form and HR records. These guys are looking for any variences. HR will review the variences and can ignor them based on common sense or ding you if it is material.

What’s the diff

Don’t lie on your resume. I got dinged on background check for saying I was a senior consultant instead of a senior associate. It’s the same thing though at PwC

I currently have it as senior consultant because nobody else uses the term associate the way PwC does. Nitpicking internal titling vs resume is kinda weird.

My current job has my title so wrong from what I actually do so putting my actual internal role name would be confusing. Even my manager has a different job title on their LinkedIn and when they recruit the role name is completely different.

like

Yeah i had a mishap on employment date. My resume date range’s correct but i fat fingered on background check and added 1 additional year to actual. I just immediately emailed the team and said that was my error and that to let me know if they’ve concerns.

I think role misalignment across organizations can be explained. There’s a business facing position title to internal HR hierarchy. For example, “head of xyz” is sometimes recognized as vp or director or whatever depending on org structure.
