I think just what you said was reasonable. The firm merger is public knowledge and it is well understood (or at least it should be) that layoffs are a given post merger. Short and sweet explanation and focus on what you learned from each place you worked and why you would make a great fit.
I agree, just focus on what you learned and can bring to the table.
This is a legit concern. I have a similar record, and I’ve found they will believe what they want regardless of what you say, I agree that it’s best to say as little as possible and focus on your unique skills and what you bring to the table over everyone else. Minimize talk about the other stuff. I had one partner lean in over the table across from me, give me a mean grimace, and say, “Tell the truth - you were fired for cause, weren’t you?” Those kind of interviews… when you get that…bye, bye. You don’t want to work there anyway.
