The best way to negotiate salary, or so I've been told, is to make the potential employer state a number first. And work from there. If it seems too low for you, say you were hoping for more, and make a counteroffer. Some organizations will rescind offers over salary negotiations, but that's generally only if the person demands something unrealistic, and comes off as unprofessional or unserious.

I never provide a number first. I always ask them for what is the best offer that commensurates with my education, experience and background and go from there
"I found salary negotiations quite challenging. I hesitated to state my worth, worried it might affect my chances of getting the role. Why do we often feel anxious about asking for fair compensation? Have you faced similar situations? What strategies do you use to negotiate salaries effectively?"
First, let me state I have NEVER been able to "negotiate salary effectively". I just got hired at a job (the other day). The Indeed app asked what I expected to make. I Googled salaries to get an idea. I put that on the app.
During the interview I was told HR would more than likely offer me the lowest of what I asked [$14] and that I should "negotiate"; especially since I won't be taking their health insurance. The hiring manager and I were really feeling each other. She wanted me to work with her, I wanted the job (it's close to home vs. the 1.5 hour EACH WAY I was driving in to Augusta sometimes after a 12 hour shift).
Fast forward to my offer from HR. Hot diggity it was $12 and some change. I almost vomited in my mouth when I read the letter. My cousin lamented, "$12, you're not a child! That's the kind of money children at McDonald's make".
So, I Chat GPT'd, Googled and everything else I could think of while formatting my "negotiating" letter. Long story short, I received an email back, Sorry, I know you're disappointed, that's what we're paying let us know if you want to move forward. TF

I personally never find it easy to talk about it. Tbh when I'm not desperate about finding a job I manage to negotiate it well but when I'm desperate to leave my job I usually mess up with my salary negotiation.

Why hesitate? Maybe you should practice that interview skill for next time. Maybe you didn’t fell secure because you just weren’t ready.
