Objection, leading the witness
Depends if the idea is good or not.
If your GCD or ECD is actually ruining your work, look for another job. There are plenty of bad creative leaders out there. But trying to make your work better is their job. You should expect a lot of input and riffing from good CDs too.

Not better or worse. Just different. There are a million ways to write these things.
As ECD1 said, it depends on whether or not the idea is good. Some ideas come in half baked and our job is to push them to excellence. But typically I have a team of a writer and art director bring me an idea, not just a writer bringing me a script. The idea is approved before the actual script is written. And even after the idea is approved, often the script itself needs a few rounds of editing to get where it needs to be.
I let the person rewrite it with suggestions. There are many ways yo solve something. If you aren't proud of what they've rewritten rewrite it then tell them

“Agencies are teaching hospitals.” Cool thought. ⭐️

Okay, so the consensus is, this is normal process for most. Just cash the check and move on. Thanks Fish!
Not normal for good CDs. More means that you have a CD who is probably a great creative but a bad CD. It’s a different job
Listen to their ideas and remember how annoying it was when no one listened as you presented. It’s normal to connect whatever they’re saying to the closest thing already in your head but fight through that and keep an open mind. They may have a great vision you’re missing. If the idea truly doesn’t work, tell them what’s missing and challenge them to fix it. Or just kill it. Write up your own ideas if yours is better. Or maybe ask if they want to collab on a thought you had and let them feel ownership.
There are a lot of nuances only CD+ are familiar with when it comes to selling scripts to particular clients. They are much closer to strategy (the business of it all - what sells, what doesn’t) and the quirks of client feedback. There are lots of details we avoid sharing with the day to day teams, bc if you knew all the parameters, it could feel defeating and overwhelming from the get go.
I don’t want my creative teams to do what I want. I want them to challenge my thinking of what I consider “good” or “my style” and make me better. Who the fuq am I? I don’t have some key to the mint of good creative thinking.
Oh, 100%. That’s the job of a creative director and what we’re paid for. But to the question, I don’t believe their ideas are just a jumping off point for me to make better by making them more my style. If the thinking is solid, strategic, on brand and, to your point, sellable, then run with it.
Our job is to guide your work not make you do it our way
