Feel like I just bombed my first arbitration. Partner was sitting in and then called me after to provide feedback 👻Please give me your first arb horror story to validate my feelings. Thx

Sorry to hear you don’t feel good about how it went! I have my first arb coming up! What do you wish you had done differently?

like

Thank you!!! Good luck!! I guess I wish I would have made sure I understood exceptions to certain objections better (such as hearsay). I also asked open ended questions on cross, giving the opposing party witness an opportunity to say something other than what I want them to say. I should have asked leading questions to get specific admissions. I also waited until my closing argument to bring up one of my most important defenses. I think it’s hard to prepare for anything and everything, especially when you’re just starting out. The partner’s feedback was super critical and made me feel like an idiot. But guess what? I won the arb :) and you will too:)

What did the partner say in terms of feedback? It could be that there's plenty of room for improvement but you actually did fine for your level of experience (think of all the red ink that a solid draft may get).

like

He commented on my cross examination style (I shouldn’t have asked so many open ended questions) and saving my best defense for my closing argument (because I froze up) and not demanding I be heard on a child witness competency issue at the beginning of the hearing...but I won :)

What did the partner say?

It is in appropriate to ask what the compensation for a position is after a first interview if they want you to go on three more and the interviewers on my first told me that was above their pay grade to tell me?????

Seems kind of ridiculous for a business to want to waste so much time to find out after a handful of interviews that the pay isnt aligned with my needs ......

I can see in biglaw not bringing up knowing damn well if you get an offer itll likely be high, but this is a midsize

Any tips for building a client base from scratch? I’m a 4th year associate at a firm of 12 attorneys. I practice in business, compliance, and real estate (primarily on partners’ files) and don’t litigate. Most of the partners’ clients are wealthy friends or friends of friends (not my circle). Associates are not referred business, even cold calls, and so far “networking” events like Chamber of Commerce luncheons have been a bust. I equate a book to autonomy and career choice and pressure is on.

I'm in a litigation, about 9 months in. Is it normal that I spend majority of my time making bundles for my partners (printing, binding, moving docs in a different order whenever there are new documents or he wants to add stuff) reviewing documents and making tables (e.g. dates, which documents are from where), and the only legal work is like notices of admission, list of documents, the occasional research? I'm so bored and I want to quit but I don't know if I have unrealistic expectations.
