Feel pretty slighted rn. Just started at a firm that normally hires outside counsel for court appearances but all of a sudden I’m going to have to make a 10 hour round trip for one. I was never told I would need to travel outside of my city for work and feel like quitting; if I knew this during the hiring process I would’ve never taken the gig.

Similar boat lol. I went in-house to a company that expects me to handle high-stakes litigation on my own because they don’t want to pay for outside counsel. Feels like I’m walking into a death sentence.

LA1, I doubt it. This level of unsophistication is a yuge red flag.

Isn’t that very easy billing?

No billing at this firm

That’s sounds like a bait and switch for sure, or at least a lack of transparency.

My job requires some travel (currently on an international flight home now after a week away) but they were upfront about that and they take care of me when I travel. I have another trip scheduled in less than a month too and more in the new year, but again, I knew this was expected.

If I were you I’d just try to see how often this will be expected and try to set boundaries/limits. If it’s a one off, it’s annoying but not the end of the world. If a regular occurrence, I’d consider exit options.

There’s some other concerning things too. I think the firm is just very disorganized and no one communicates. Back to government I go

Wow - you’re going to quit because you have to travel outside of your city? You’re being paid to do your job and if that is part of your job then I don’t understand why you’re feeling slighted. Employers don’t have to detail out every possible task that you might need to take. Were you told that you would never ever have to travel? Were you guaranteed that you would only have to work in your city? Unless you’re going from a professional capacity to being told to do work in the field I don’t see the problem.

How do I be a decent manager to a coworker who's upset I've been promoted twice in two years and they haven't? We started out as coworkers, became decent friends after a few good moments, but went back to simply coworkers after they flubbed a few projects and I had to step in to clean up. I'm non-confrontational but year-end reviews are right around the corner and I'm worried about having to act professional to someone who I got too close with and who now hates me.

Mid-level associate at a mid-size regional insurance defense firm practicing coverage litigation. Salary is capped b/c my firm only does I.D./coverage and has no direct-hire comm clients. Second round of interviews with a comm lit boutique where I would be the only associate with 5 partners. Other than partner track, salary/benefits, and switching from coverage to general comm lit, what qualities of the move should I be thinking about as I weigh my options? I've never worked at another firm.

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.

Hi new here. Idk what my value is and if I’m getting paid an amount that reflects my hard work. I am a paralegal for a small law firm (family and immigration) w only 1 attorney. I have about 20 files or more in my rotation at a time. I work on various types of cases at once. Some are simple, others are extensive. I feel like it’s very unstructured and one of the managers micromanages. It’s like every man for himself. Take home pay is $50k. I am working on my bachelors deg. Do I get paid enough?

For the past few months, I’ve been loaned to another practice group for a good chunk of time. While the people are decent and the hours aren’t terrible, I detest the work and don’t see a future in this new practice. My main partner says it should end in the next month, but I don’t expect that to happen. Is it a terrible idea to ask to be taken off?
