First year associate. Have been practicing corporate and commercial real estate law for 11 months. Not sure what I like about / if I like what I do. I have been thinking of reaching out to a career coach, mainly to learn more about myself and whether I would be happier in a new role. Has anyone had success with a career coach? Alternatively, would speaking to a therapist be a better option? (I’m not depressed or having any mental health concerns but think it could be insightful).

Agreed it’s too soon. But if you feel the same way around this time next year, there’s shame in looking elsewhere. The job is too stressful to not like what you’re doing.

What kind of law did you hope to practice when you started law school? What classes did you enjoy?

I've been in real estate 10 years and was doing estate planning before. I have been pulled onto some L&E matters when needed and as much as I love the drama and sensationalism in those, the deadlines would drive me insane. Obviously real estate has its own deadlines, but they are often arbitrary and can be pushed (by the people up top). Litigation deadlines missed can be terribly catastrophic, so that's just not for me. Transactional work comes with its own stress for sure, but I know I would take it over lit any day of the week.

Agreed with the sentiments that you don’t likely have enough data yet for a career coach to be helpful. Yes, I used one as a senior associate to determine if I wanted to pursue partnership and strategize best practices. It was a very helpful experience.

I have an asset purchase of a retail store transaction. Seller is keeping the second location. Seller is licensing the name from the buyer. The licensing agreement is supposed to contain provisions so that the seller cannot offer promotions or discounts that the buyer does not also offer (i.e., seller cannot undercut buyer's pricing). I know very little about antitrust. Can anyone give me some suggestions how to enforceably draft this agreement, or is this arrangement impossible?

Is it possible to be a “silent” investor (party A) with a friend who’s an accredited investor (party B)investing in a company? So if B is investing $50k in a company, and A wants to give B $25k of that investment, is this possible with an agreement between A and B, where they’re responsible for their own portion of taxes?

Curious as to how many deals at once is typical for a first year associate to take on (M&A, mostly private equity clients). Deal size is lower middle market and I’ve worked on deals ranging from $1-$110M. 2 deals at once is plenty for me, but it seems like my peers are able to take on more than that at once and still do fine. Maybe I’m just a slow learner/out of my league at the big law firm I’m at.

Junior associate here, should I ask for more money if my firm is about 10-15 percent less hours but about 30 percent less pay? The gap will never be closed to the top pay scale at my firm but when I decided to come to this firm the pay difference was about 15 percent and not 30.
