I did this about 8 months ago. I was doing M&A at a smaller midsized firm and moved to finance at a large regional firm. I made the move as a third year associate.
The bones (checklists, resolutions, lien searches, sig pages, etc.) of the transactions are the same, but you do have to learn new documents. I think finance work is kind of boring, but in my experience the finance deals move faster than M&A deals, and I like that.
I’m definitely working more, but I also moved to a larger firm for the pay raise, so that was to be expected. I think generally, the end of the year in finance is insanely busy— just fyi.
Feel free to PM me with any specific questions.
Thanks for this input! I’m about to make the same move myself and I’m pretty nervous about the decision (especially as I’ve gotten feedback that I’m making a mistake going into finance).
Are you talking like IB/PE to corp finance (including corp dev)? Or just avoiding m&a (including corp dev) all together? I work in a fortune 500 corp dev team. Prior I was in asset management. Hours aren't bad at either but we're slightly better at my asset management role, largely because it was a firm in the middle of nowhere with a good work/life balance
To clarify, I mean transition away from doing M&A legal work as a deal team member to doing corporate finance legal work.
Makes sense! I’m currently working in M&A and it’s difficult to predict busy/lag times.
