Depends on where you want to go, but hard to bet against M&A/general corporate for most things. In-house M&A roles let you work with high-ups in Corp Dev, who are usually plugged in with c-suite and report to CEO/CFO/CSO/etc. types that are in charge of strategy.
The key here is finding what kind of company you want to work for; then see what their counsel did before joining.
For example, if you want to be on the business side at a REIT, you’re probably better off doing Real Estate. Or if you want to eventually be a principal at a PE fund, a Funds attorney or a M&A attorney focused on PEMA is probably more marketable.
Just know that none of this is linear as law isn’t a traditional career path to strategy/ops. As the old adage goes, your experience may very.
Tech/ECVC work offers a wealth of interesting exit opportunities. Highly competitive, however, as many associates aim to go down this route.
I would say M&A and capital markets type things. I can't imagine aircraft finance unless you are going into that industry in particular...same for energy transactions.
My understanding is aircraft finance is capital markets heavy, so maybe that makes sense.
Finance not good - it’s commodity work and you aren’t part of any real strategic decisionmaking. ECVC work where you are outside GC + sell-side M&A give you the most experience working with business leaders.
