I'm not sure if this was meant to be a response to something, but I agree with it. That's like my life motto: friendly but not friends. Especially in the workplace, where friendship can turn sour anytime.
So true and so sad that in today's world, the friends you usually have are gone if you change jobs. Its so shallow! I remember years ago in a sociology class, the professor stating that "The older we get, the harder it is to make real friends".
I feel like I’m missing some context here. But I think being friendly is more than enough in a workplace. Be friendly and professional and keep your work relationships and your friendship separate.

Yeah, that's a hard-earned lesson a lot of us pick up eventually. You can be cordial, collaborative, even enjoy the people you work with, but at the end of the day it's a business arrangement for them and for you. Expecting the company (or even your manager) to treat you like a true friend is usually where the disappointment creeps in, especially when raises are tiny and promotions are nonexistent.
