I’m not in audit but I heard someone say they are like the person at the Walmart store at the exit who checks your receipt to see if it matches what’s in your cart lol
Is this a trick question? Audit is probably one of the easiest things to explain.

An audit is an independent examination of a company’s financial statements to ensure they are accurate and comply with accounting standards and laws.
The purpose is so to give confidence to investors, regulators, and the public that the financial information is trustworthy.

How I explain it to my kids - every company has to keep track of how much money they have, bills the pay, debt, etc. My job is to make sure they're right (enough) so when other people look at the numbers, they know they can trust them.

I would explain it by saying “I’m an auditor” and if they’re living anywhere but under a rock their entire life, they’ll most likely understand what that means without any further explanation.
