If you don’t already know, figure out yours/each others love languages (there is a free quiz). That way you can proactively fill his cup and vice versa with the minimal amount of effort when things are nutty. For my husband (and a lot of them) it’s touch, so a little arm squeeze or long hug while the kids eat breakfast does wonders. For me, it’s acts of service, so my hubs has learned that cleaning something up without asking will mean a happier wife.
The truth is…we don’t. We’re in roommate phase now. Having kids has put a huge strain on our relationship, where all I see is my husband’s parenting flaws.
Don't forget that your kids will grow up and leave. So focus on building your relationship as best friends with your spouse. You are on the same team. Have conversations about what both of you can do to help the other feel loved and appreciated. Get a babysitter and go on dates without the kids.
It’s the small stuff for us. Look for opportunities - I really appreciate it when my husband lets me sleep in or makes my favorite meal. We make sure we both stay up late to watch our favorite show once a week. We communicate our schedule and do daily recaps so we are on the same page about what needs to get done. When we get too disconnected we go to couples therapy to reset.
My kids are 9 and almost 5. It finally feels like we have room and space to breathe and really have time to enjoy each other again (without the kids).
