Might depend on what your PhD is. Economics or statistics probably are different than sciences. I know my recruitment was based on personal relationships with some partners who were looking for my expertise. But if you do economics, then you probably fit in transfer pricing or something similar and that recruient flows with the economic's job market annual conferences. That's about all I know.
Tier 2 here (ATK, OW, RB, S&...). Ph.D. in Management Science and consulting experience (boutique and Big4) prior to doctoral studies. Network-based recruiting, with 3 interviews with partners and, unexpectedly, not even one case interview.
I had friends from my previous consulting experiences and during my phd years I networked with others doctoral students who went to consulting. If you don’t know anybody at your target firms, my suggestion is to just reach people out on LinkedIn. It works! I have helped people who reached me on LinkedIn and know many people who have done it too.
MBB = McKinsey, Boston consulting group, and Bain, typically regarded as the top strategy firms. OP = original poster, person who started the thread.
