What does the recruitment process look like for PhD candidates for the Big 4 and tier 2 firms? I know MBB recruits PhDs, but am unclear about the rest.

Is there a professional/respectful way to decline a take home case study that doesn't automatically disqualify you from the candidate pool?

A friend is considering deferring an offer (stem PhD) for 1 year straight out of undergrad to work in NY, either in a research institution or a biotech.
