For those who have survived a layoff, how do you manage the sudden drop in morale at the office? Right now, it just feels like being handed twice the workload for the exact same pay. The atmosphere in the office is completely dead, everyone is updating their resumes on the side.

I’ve lived this several times. Looking back I made the mistake of keeping all the balls in the air, working longer hours, stressing myself out so that everything still had the same high quality etc.

I should have done a few controlled explosions. Let a few things fall on the floor so management gets a clue that we can’t do it all with 20%, 36%, 50% less staff. Instead I ran myself into the ground.

Let them feel the impact of THEIR decision early on. Let a few things drop within 30-60 days so they tie that back to the cuts. If you do the explosion 6-12 months later after you’re exhausted and can’t do 80 hours a week anymore … they won’t connect it to THEIR decision to cut staff.

When you cut staff you cut scope. It’s as simple as that.

They don’t care so do what you can, but don’t work yourself to death. If it doesn’t resolve quickly like in a few weeks then start looking yourself.

At wf I survived several until I didn’t. You just keep doing the work and make sure your check is in the bank. You know the devil you are dealing with. Acceptance is all you can work towards. You can try to ensure you have skills that will be transferred to a new employer if you get cut later.

I am in a tech IC position. One of friends switched to FAANG by converting the profile to consultant profile. The friend who might have less tech knowledge than me is now in FAANG and earning more. If the end goal would be that the friend might one day be a product manager and me an engineering manager taking instructions from the same friend, isn't consultant profile an easier path to growth. I had been practising DSA for years and the competition is only ever growing.

I got a call from the Google recruiter about my L7 em interview Google She said I did overwhelmingly good on all interviews except one had mixed feedback on a system design. No surprise because it was not a good interview. The recruiter said i had a choice to go to hiring committee, give referrals they could call about my system design or take another system design interview. I’m not confident about the system design because of the bad experience I had with the previous interviewer. What should I do?
