I'm in Australia but I get recruiters calling me all the time for Power BI. Large organisations love it. Often they're asking me to build something that no ones ever going to use, but I'm happy to take their money.
Executive get frustrated about how long it takes to get ad hoc data, let alone get a new report built, so they feel self-service via power BI is going to solve all their problems, and they invest heavily in it.
Yes, my cynicism level is at 100%.
It's easy money.
More important skills are business analysis skills - understanding the audience for your report, guiding the solution or alternatives, explaining the product's benefits and limitations.
Agree, that's pretty much what I do-- business intelligence, market analysis. Integrating our systems. Reporting using SQL server, ETL, powerbi. But lately my job has turned into a lot of Salesforce development work, which isn't my favorite. I need to see something pretty at the end of at least some projects, not just flows and page layouts.
Would love for recruiters to knock on my door, lol, but I'm not exactly promoting myself.

I have a team of PoweBi engineers. They get paid more than SWEs. They work on cloud and on-prem offerings as well as front/back end dev, data integration, and AI.
That sounds AMAZING. So they're creating visuals, too (making pretty things), or are they making the tools used to make pretty things?
I love backend work, but have come to really love front end, as well, so am definitely curious about the roles of your team!
BI in general is picking up. I work to develop BI tools that connect with a specific ERP system and since I joined that team i do see a demand that keeps going up. I am more behind the scene on the development side but on occasion I will also build the visualizations.
Usually people either go PowerBI or Data Studio(now looker studio) for visualization (from what I have seen so far as a general tendency).
In terms of skills and what helps I would say SQL, understanding data models/how to build them/making sure you know the best practice, understanding the business case/reason why you are doing a certain dashboard.
