Looking for some advice on how to branch off into a job in tech. I’m a Mechanical engineer interested in working in a big tech company. I have some programming experience but excel mostly in mechanical and product design as well as 3D CAD. Was wondering if any other mechanical engineers have managed to make the shift from a traditional mech job to a tech job and if you could give me advice on the best path that worked for you. Thanks!

Start learning an OOO language like C# or Java or learn Python and build a simple thing, commit it to a Git repo (or a MERN stack app is pretty easy). Get the book Cracking the Code Interview. Lastly, lie lie lie. Create a resume that says you have at least 1 year of experience. Hit me up and I’ll act like I was your previous manager/prof reference. You’re in. I came from a philosophy background and just studied Java for 40 days, then falsified a resume. First software job I worked was with Deloitte. I’ve been working in tech for 11 years. If you’re a mech, you can pick it up, no sweat. There are more steps for sure but don’t be intimidated, you can do it
