Former partner here who took time off for burnout recovery. Currently looking at easing back into it with a contract role at my prior mid-size national firm and am considering whether an hourly or project-based fee structure makes the most sense and what the going rates are in midwest metropolitan areas. Projects would largely include case/risk/settlement assessment and drafting memos to clients re: same. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I think it depends on how much control over your schedule you want. In my completely amateur assessment, it seems you would have more control over billing what you want/need if you went with an hourly structure. Project structure strikes me as something they will use to incentivize you to work as much as needed to get the project over the finish line. Projects also have a way of expanding in scope without necessarily expanding in compensation when there’s an agreed-upon flat fee.

For associates who have lateraled in the last 6 months or so, what made you decide to move? Has your situation improved since moving? I’m a transactional mid-level & I’ve interviewed with some great firms recently. I’m struggling to get excited though…it just seems like no matter where I go I’ll be overworked & under appreciated. Hoping there are some positive stories out there to give me hope. Haha

Hi new here. Idk what my value is and if I’m getting paid an amount that reflects my hard work. I am a paralegal for a small law firm (family and immigration) w only 1 attorney. I have about 20 files or more in my rotation at a time. I work on various types of cases at once. Some are simple, others are extensive. I feel like it’s very unstructured and one of the managers micromanages. It’s like every man for himself. Take home pay is $50k. I am working on my bachelors deg. Do I get paid enough?

Just had a hearing on my motion to compel where OC told the judge we hadn’t conferred before filing the motion. Not only did I attempt to confer on 3 separate dates, I attached the emails and his response that he refused to confer to my motion. Judge didn’t care, as soon as she heard him say we hadn’t conferred she denied the motion. Not asking a question, just needed to vent.
