Four months into my retail role, I applied for a team lead opening they encouraged us to chase. I prepped after shifts, felt hopeful. A week later my shifts vanished, then came a short message saying they were “moving in another direction” and the role went to an outside hire. Sat in my car wondering if the effort ever mattered. Have you felt that too?

I know how you feel. I worked at a major hotel/timeshare for several years and was passed on promotions several times. Each time they gave me reasons that made sense, I was lucky to have leaders who actually sat me down and explained it. This last time, I quit last year for another job, they had no excuses other than "it's a director level position and to go from front line to director is quite a jump" mind you, I supervised that department for 3 years by myself years ago. I did go to other departments to broaden my horizons and better myself to see how different departments operated, but apparently it wasn't enough.

You've also been there 4 months you said? You're still fairly new. Keep at it and you'll move up. Not all bosses are bad bosses.

That sucks. Sorry this happened to you. Please know you are awesome and that sometimes a good work ethic sadly goes unnoticed especially in retail. Don't let other's actions shift your thinking of who you are. Sometimes I say "obstacles are opportunities in disguise."

This is so true

No, mostly because I know it doesn't. I can give my all day in and day out and it's still not going to help me get promoted because I'm not close with my boss. Work politics are what matter here, not competency.

God saw your continual diligence and strenuous effort. You will get the role somewhere else. Be encouraged and stay motivated. Work politics is a thing, but don’t give up

Sometimes the effort doesn’t matter, unfortunately. The hiring process can be unfair, especially if you don’t know how the candidates are weighed against each other. In any case, keep your head up and move on, there are bigger and better things ahead!
