I always make sure I list their personal numbers. Any time I ask someone if I can use them as a reference, I ask to list their cell phone numbers. That way you don't run into that issue.

Yeah that could be a good idea but also it's work related and quite a few don't want to be non-work disrupted.

As long as you keep in touch, it doesn’t matter where they end up. As someone else said, keep their personal number and email, and you will always be able to use them as a reference, as long as they remember you and your performance.

I can't lie I haven't kept in touch with anyone from any of my previous jobs...

That happens a lot in retail. By the time you need a reference, the manager you worked with has already moved on and nobody left really knows your work. It definitely makes the reference section feel a bit pointless sometimes.
