I'm sorry you had kind of a chaotic week. Those are always very destabilizing, especially before the holidays. For me, my back up plan is my freelance career. If my job goes south, I can still sustain myself.
If someone has a "backup plan" in place, there's probably a good reason. Most of us go through life in blissful ignorance, convinced of our invincibility, until disaster strikes. My spouse calls me Cleopatra, because I'm "the queen of de Nile." I've been kicked in the "asp" by company shakeups before, so I know what you are feeling. Be realistic, take what precautions you can, but don't get overly paranoid. Be prepared to temporarily cobble together a few low-paying part-time positions -- retail clerk, waitress, substitute teacher, etc. -- to keep the lights on, a roof over your head, and food on the table should the worst-case scenario come true.
That's really stressful. Pretty much the same as yours, reach out to my network and hope something materializes. Not ideal.
I think you may be too brazen in your conclusion. If you only reached out 2 days ago, in the middle of the holidays at the end of the year, and a time when agencies and companies are a little hesitant due to economic concerns, you’ve gotta give yourself more time before you start thinking the worst. I’m sure you’ll be fine either way, at least that’s what I tell myself as I navigate the world of being newly unemployed for the first time in my career.
But fwiw, my backup plan is to be a Lyft Driver. So if you see me pop up on your phone, 5 stars please! 😂
Don’t stress. EOY scaries.
You’ll be fine. Enjoy the holiday break!
Come back with reinvigorated fervour for the job you love!
Buy stocks when things are going well—Apple, Microsoft, Google. As many tech and pharma shares as you can. Dump when needed. That’s what’s kept me going the last four months since my layoff.
Wait… have I been doing this wrong!?
I'm like a squirrel hoarding acorns for winter. I squirrel away a portion of my income into a "freelance fund" that I can tap into if I need to bridge the gap between jobs. It's my financial parachute.
Aka the Fuck Off Fund. Always have 3
