Had to drive 1.5 hours to work today. How much is too much of a commute?

That. That is too much of a commute.

My dept was moved changing my commute to 6 hours daily. If I quit I didn’t get a package. I did it for 2 years until I got a significant layoff package.

Not really, plus I have dogs at home I had to take care of.

Brutal commute time, how is the traffic and actual roads getting there though? I could easily spend 4 hours a day commuting when the roads get bad. Avoiding main highways has its pros and cons.

Traffic usually wasn’t bad. It was just a really long distance through multiple states.

I live 50 miles away from my job in one of the biggest US metropolitan areas (with no commuter trains). I start around 9 am (I have flexibility because I have a really demanding job and work very long hours every week). Tues-Thurs, traffic is awful no matter which route you take (with multiple accidents on most mornings causing snarls). It takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes on a good Tues-Thurs and can go to 1.5 hours on a bad Tues-Thurs. On Mondays and Fridays, when more people tend to work remotely, and there's less traffic and accidents are more rare, it takes about one hour. Driving home at night with low traffic, I can make it home in 50 minutes. At my firm, we get two remote days and get to pick which ones, so I work remote on Wednesdays and Thursdays. This means I can work really late on Monday and Tuesday (and avoid wasting time in bad evening traffic), and then I can catch up on my sleep by rolling out of bed close to 9 am am (I'm usually able to go to bed around 1 am on those nights since I leave the office around 9 or 10 pm on most Mondays and Tuesdays).

My prior job required 4 days in office and with an 8 am start time (and were less flexible despite it also being a similar, demanding job that was way understaffed and with really long hours), and it was located in an incredibly congested part of town. Tues-Thurs, it would take me a minimum of 1.5 hours, and often 2 hours (sometimes more) each way if I left during rush hour. I was exhausted and miserable, and had no time to recuperate or take care of things at home (and some of them were just not great people, compared to the people at my current firm, so I was getting that extra stress on top of the heavy workload, long hours, exhausting commute 4 out of 5 days, and personal to do list at home overflowing). I noticed the traffic on the toll road and highway that I take (both for this job and the previous job) is exponentially worse in the 7-8 am time slot than it is in the 8-9 am time slot. So changing to a 9 am start time, having 2 back to back remote days, and being in an office tower in downtown instead an office complex just three miles to the southwest in a congested part of town has made a HUGE difference to my mental health and exhaustion. I was miserable for 18 months and was so glad to land my current job. I will never accept a job in that part of town ever again. I can't move closer (for multiple reasons), so I have accepted that I will have a commute and I've made the best of it.

1 hour max for me! At least it should take that time

Today's high point in my chemistry class: I am teaching Atomic theory and structure. I have my students look at their periodic table and I walk through the information listed for each element. At this point I talk about a lot of big ideas that are related as an prelude to where we are headed. One student told me that she took chemistry last year, and in 10 minute I was able to connect all of the pieces that never made any sense to her. Her 'aha's moment was like candy to me.
