Honestly, I think tipping culture is overcomplicated and inconsistent. I wish there was a global standard! I stick to researching beforehand, but if I’m unsure, I tip lightly or not at all, depending on the country’s norms. Sometimes over-tipping can create unrealistic expectations for locals, especially in developing countries.
I’ve been in the same boat, and what works for me is using tipping guides on travel apps like TripAdvisor or Google Maps. If I forget, I’ll watch what locals do in similar situations—it’s a great way to gauge what’s appropriate. For complicated scenarios, I usually default to rounding up or a modest tip unless it’s a place like Japan, where tipping is a no-go.
Tipping outside of North America is really different and I think Americans bring thier tipping culture with them rather than acclimate to their environment. I am from the EU and I rarely tip —only when the service has been truly outstanding. Most employers in the EU pay their staff well so they are not living off tips or starting students or whatever guilt scenario people employ when justifying a generous tip. The grossest exploitation we saw was in an all-exclusive resort in Mexico, not only did we pay a premium price for meals, drinks, and service, but if you don’t tip, you are flat out ignored or receive really poor service. It was obscene watching people throw money around to receive goods and services they already paid for.
