I left a full time perm job for a 6 month contract, im now on my 2nd contract and just secured my 3rd which will take me to my 22 months of being a CW. Best decision i ever made!
That part I’m less worried about, I’m good at making connections (and is actually the role I’d be taking on basically) I’m good at being proactive but there’s only so much within your power that you can control. So I’m glad to hear it’s possible at least!
1) depends on your employment company but I think most pay weekly. You have to watch your paychecks because my employment agency was HORRIBLE with accounting… actually overpaid me and I had to then pay them back over the course of several months. That said, if you fill your time sheets out on time, you’ll be paid on time. Just look at your pay stubs for irregularities.
2) I was treated great as most of my team was also made up of contractors. There are certain meetings you can’t go to and you don’t get their awesome benefits, but from what I gathered, over half the workers are contract. I would say despite being a contractor, they will always aim to renew your contract unless performance is subpar or there’s a financial catastrophe.
3) I am converting in a few weeks after dragging my feet on a few open positions. The comp package is slightly less than contracting rate but I’m excited for the stability and benefits.
Overall I’m so glad I made the leap to Meta, even as a contractor. The money, WLB and people are all really good (for me anyway) and it’s a great way to see if you even want to pursue a conversion.
Fair enough, thanks for all your help!
I’m not sure I would do this honestly. Especially right now. I think it also depends on which org you join what your experience will be. Headcount can be an issue and you should definitely get a sense of what the future needs and role might be scoped to. Sometimes in the end the need might be senior and with the freezes this might be more likely in the future. I would say if you are looking for FTE it’s a serious gamble.
