Has anyone been in a similar position? I left a toxic firm about two years ago in a fairly tight-knit legal community. I’ve recently heard that a former colleague, with whom I had significant professional difficulties, is making negative and inaccurate statements about my mental health, character, and trustworthiness. This is unfortunately a common tactic by abusive employers at law firms. It’s part of what makes the “boys’ club” culture of law firms so dangerous for women.

I would consult with an employment attorney to advise on how to handle it. They can provide advice behind the scenes on your options, which can include a sternly-worded letter to this person.

Note that while your statute of limitation to file an EEOC charge about this person might have run several months after leaving the firm, their ongoing defamation/disparagement of you likely re-opens the timeliness of your complaints against them.

OP — Yes, her behavior seems to be driven by retaliatory animus. Retaliation claims are very common and often easier to prove than hostile work environment claims.

So it seems that you have an active retaliation claim against her, and possibly her firm, since they have and still are permitting her to badmouth you.

I would definitely consult with a plaintiff side employment attorney about this situation and seek their advice on your legal rights and how to stop this.

Firms need to be taught a lesson and sometimes a threat of an EEOC charge is enough to get them to behave. You don’t need to litigate in open court — everything can be resolved privately.

I’ve been intentionally tight-lipped about my experience. Some of the conduct I endured was genuinely inappropriate, and my priority at the time was to step away, move forward, and focus on healing rather than engaging in conflict.

I would appreciate any perspective or advice from others who might have gone through something similar. I’m a young attorney and they are much more senior to me. I’ve never encountered anyone like this before.

I had a very unstable partner target me for YEARS. I worked for her as a first year junior and she had 30+ years of experience. It seemed she had impulse control issues and a paranoid personality disorder. She was worried I, a first year junior, was going to steal her clients...??

If it's obvious from speaking to this person that they're not credible, I wouldn't worry about it. Iv met several partners over the years who know her and they all wanted tea from me cus they knew she was crazy. Otherwise, cease and desist letter!

It's gotten her to the point that she's a rainmaker! I'm so glad to hear that you're able to move. Vindictive people tend to not let go. Ever...

i’m so sorry you’re experiencing this. i would consult with an employment attorney for guidance on this. i’ve experienced something similar in my career. when i was clerking, i was verbally abused and berated by the secretary often. she even went as far as telling me no law firm would ever want to hire me because i got migraines. she dumped her work on me, etc etc. i reported her to HR, and she apparently ended up having to do sensitivity training. they knew it was me even though i had made the complaint anonymously. i’ve been blackballed by that particular courthouse ever since i did what i did but i had to stick up for myself 🤷‍♀️

Regrettably relatable experience. When I left law firms for in-house life, it was mostly because of one specific partner. I heard he told everyone I left to go be a stay at home mom. I didn’t have kids at the time, and I do now (years later) but I’m still the primary earner in our house so I work full time. But more than him being objectively wrong, his position is also deeply sexist, because so what if I WAS leaving to be a stay at home mom, you know? Anyway, your work ethic and abilities will speak for themselves, and chances are high that anyone who knows the partner badmouthing you knows them well enough to know they’re full of shit.
