You should still be paid hourly for time spent driving for work errands or assignments. Mileage reimbursement is just to compensate you for your gas and wear and tear on your car.

You’re doing it right. It’s business and I’ve also billed the client or if that’s not acceptable to my office/admin hours.
I have heard that firms don’t want you doing this because, since you’re on the clock, technically they would be liable in the event there was an accident or something went wrong.
I’ve had to do this at a prior firm and I was clocked in because I was handling work. It was not an issue for my job since they’re the reason I was having to drive to other places and do pick ups and drop offs. Also tracked mileage too.
That’s a tough one. It’s always been standard at my firm to stay on the clock while doing work-related errands. Maybe she’s just never thought about it that way? Hopefully, she’ll come around once she realizes you’re saving her time.
In CA, you get reimburse for the use of whatever it is you’re using to get the job done. For instance, driving to her house— you get paid mileage and your time. You absolutely should be paid your hourly rate. It’s not free And you’re certainly not off the clock when clearly you’re still working. It’s also against the Labor Code to not be paid for such tasks when clearly you’re still on the clock. Did she think it’s free? Maybe it’s time to find another job.
