Has anyone negotiated their severance package before? Was told by the company that it wasn’t open for discussion but I’m finding that hard to believe.

I recall someone telling me they tried that and a company said it was standardized and in the employee handbook. The policy was that they wouldn't make exceptions for anyone. I can see their point, it could get complicated. In any event, it came down to it not being open for discussion. I assume for high ranking positions that wouldn't apply, of course, some of those packages are pretty lavish and definitely not standardized.

Find an employment layer and get a severance package review. They should be able to tell you if you're entitled to more, or if it's not worth the effort.

I have but you need to also have friends in high places within the company to help move the needle.

Never tried. The two times I've been laid off I was just happy to get anything. Probably a stupid decision on my part, I wonder if I left money on the table by not trying.

Frankly, I'd be worried they would take back what they offered. Severance packages are generally not protected by law (though possibly your contract). I would be shocked if it was negotiable after hiring...

i feel like its really hit or miss, and whenever i tried they always said everyone is getting the same

You usually are more successful when an employment lawyer gets involved.

Depends on the labor laws in your area. Where I am at, you are not entitled to any severance legally speaking. So I would just take whatever they give because they could just let you go and pay you up to the moment security walks you out the door.

Anyone know of headhunters in publishing or entertainment, or good ones in our world who are savvy in such things?

I’m currently in the process of being converted from contractor to permanent. In my initial conversations I was under the impression that I was in a different pay grade and asked for a salary 25k higher than the max allotted for my position. I feel like it gave the impression that I don’t know what I’m doing. Any suggestion how I can recover from this?

Rough day in the office and in the mood for something that would toss me around and maybe hurt a little. Black peppercorn crusted bacon left on a smoker too long and covered in jam made from under-ripe red fruits. The 59% ABV is definitely present, and you can smell the peat smoke from across the room. The finish lasts for days. If you’re already into peated scotch but want to crank it up another level, the cask strength Laphroaigs can show you your limits. Hurts soooo good 😌

I’ve had to step away from social media for my own mental sanity as I have a major issue with comparing myself to peers when it comes to life stages. Any advice on staying away or including it in my life in healthy ways?

Senior engineer making 135k and I was offered a promotion to engineering manager after completing a development plan. Near the end of the plan and I expect compensation talks to start soon. Based on some research around Boston and my role in the company, I feel 165k plus 10-15% bonus is fair. Nonetheless, first time going through something like this and asking for thoughts and comments. I have been at my company for 3.5 years. One year ago (2.5 years into my employment with them) they re-leveled everyone and I was bumped to an entry level position on the terms that they changed my job title when they re-leveled, so “technically” I am at the early stages of my new title. Even though the job duties did not really change.
I’m not sure the best way to approach this. Has anyone else had a similar experience or know how I should advocate for myself?

Any thoughts on what I could ask for at end of year reviews for a salary increase?
