No movie recommendations per se. But if you want to try and make it special would suggest diming the lights, getting popcorn, having stuffies nearby. Make it feel different and just makes it feel like more special to both you and them.
We had Friday family night. One of the kids would pick the movie, taking turns of course. We pretty much watched all the Disney, Pete the Dragon was a big hit, Whini the Pooh, Mr Dress Up (Canadian show that we got in Mi). When they were a little older, it changed to game night (board games). We’d make it special and have them invite a friend, prearranged of course and w the idea that it might run a little late (9-9:30). We also had family meetings weekly when our boys (now adults) pretty much through MS then it dropped off to maybe once a month.. We’d get a bowl of popcorn or bag of mms or the like and open the floor. We still have family meetings when something big is going on, it’s zoom now given the kids are all over the place.
Cherish these days, they’re magic! 💖
My little one is obsessed with Mary Poppins (the original) right now. If your kiddos have any favorite music, I would pick the movie it came from!
Mary Poppins is such a good one! My kids were skeptical at first and then LOVED it.
Toy Story
Yes!
Moana
The sole purpose of this app is to provide unsolicited commentary. I didn’t mean to be rude or judgmental.. but I genuinely believe that shielding kids from scary stuff too much can have reverse consequences. I’ve noticed how much more resilient my kids are than my nephews and I’ve often wondered if little things like that have made a difference. Just sharing my experience with kid’s movies.
Totoro!
+1 to this one
The Wild Robot🤖
How have you made it this far without screentime?! You are better than me
I don't think it's 'better', per se. My kids learn a lot from the curated shows we let them watch, from art shows to history and technology. Sure, they also watch some junk too and have done since they were babies, but they're both top of their classes and can read and write well, so I honestly don't see what the fuss is about.
Frozen, Moana and Puss in Boots. They’ve had moments of obsession with these. Frozen songs are easy for toddlers to learn too
Lion king
Respectfully disagree.
Scene of mufasa dying and then the cub snuggling with his dead father is rough
Encanto.
If they’ve never watched movies or TV you might want to start with some shorter films? Or be prepared to have some breaks in between depending on energy and concentration levels.
My 5 year old only started having enough attention span to watch a full length movie when he turned 5. Before that we’d be lucky if he sat still for 20-30 minutes (long enough for an episode of Bluey’s or Paw Patrol but not Frozen or Moana).
Thanks! Definitely thought about this. Figure if anything we can watch it over a couple of nights. I think my 3 year old will definitely struggle to sit through a full length film
Madagascar
If you have the ability to find Chitty Chitty Bang Bang or Bedknobs & Broomsticks or the original Mary Poppins, those are great starts.
Ponyo!
Here to say NOT Frozen. The parents die in the movie - no one warned me before I showed my kids…so just an fyi that you might not want to deal with that conversation tonight
my 2.5 year old (now 3) always made me skip this part. still does. he says “i don’t like it”. kids understand so much more than we realize 😞
Start with Chucky lol jk
😂 my childhood nightmare
We stick to the older stuff, aka my daughter is obsessed with the Winnie the Pooh movie from 1977.
Charlie and the chocolate factory
You should watch some classics. Totoro or Ponyo are surprisingly good. Some Disney movies including Bambi, Winnie the Pooh and The Aristocats are great options too. And if you like your kids to sing: Encanto, Moana, the Lion King or K-Pop Demon Hunters are safe for little ones.
Brave - SUCH a good film!!
