Yes. It was awful — but worse still, would have been my team seeing an unfair abuse of resources, no accountability, on top of of subpar performance.

I have. Hated doing it. Recognized the necessity. Still in touch with the three people who I let go and one seem to be happier, another is thriving and the third won’t talk to me.
Honestly it’s better to dissociate. It’s never fun but you need to realize however you feel, they will feel 10x worse.

Unfortunately yes. More than a few times. I always find it feels terrible, even in the handful of times where it was warranted.

MD answered it well. Sometimes people, in my opinion, are let go for “performance issues” faster than I would personally have suggested. When I say it was warranted, I mean out and out bad actors.
It is a relief. The quicker this door closes, another one opens. Best to now waste time with a bad fit.
