I say tech instead of IT

Yes, all the time. I’ve gotten pretty good at my elevator pitch for what I do, more for social settings than anything.
Rising Star
Same here, I have got my elevator pitch down to about 10 seconds now. Doesn't stop the so you fix computers? follow up though.
All these jobs say they are hiring and then you go though all the steps and they still don't hire. They always say they went with some one else. But they say you were on the top of the list but go with someone else.
Rising Star
That's a different kind of frustration, and you're not wrong. Top of the list but we went with someone else, stings every time. It feels like they never had real intent to hire.
My wife still doesn’t understand what I do

This made me laugh because it is so real. My partner still thinks I work with computers. I've given up explaining it to her
IT is Solving one problem at a time. They help with everything in everyone’s day to day computer life with any electronic device available. It’s like being someone’s AI assistant over the phone helping with little tasks here and there and when we are needed the most, we take the time out of our day to visit you in person and take care of it all at once.
Rising Star
AI assistant over the phone is a bit accurate. And when things really break, suddenly we're heroes. Until the next password reset.
I get family all the time that want me to help fix their printer/phone or magically make their home internet faster or more reliable. While I’m generally pretty good with all tech, my actual job is more of a mix of being an automation engineer and sys admin.
You try to explain that the job entails anything from managing provisioning templates for our Field team, to creating and deploying GPOs, to building internal .net apps, to creating bots/flows in Power Automate. Anything beyond “turning it on and off again” gets most people lost in what IT actually entails.
Rising Star
Beyond turning it off and on again. You list all that complex, legit engineering work, and they will still ask if you can fix their WiFi. The respect gap is real.
