Partners, what is your magic number (in terms of dollars in the bank), after which you intend to retire?

I’m not a partner- I’m 31, SM, and my number is $4m. My net worth is $1.2m and I intend to get to $4M ish by 37-38 using my current investing strategy. I am not factoring in making partner and increasing my take home or anything. Current saving rate and growth rates should get me there. If I hit those numbers, I will quit consulting to start my real estate development/ brokering business.

I’m sure the city has to matter as well. The massive tax rates I pay including the nyc tax doesn’t leave much to save that much.

This is my number too.

Not a partner but my number is 6 million. I’m at ~ 300k invested, 3 years into a 30 year mortgage and 35k in cash. I’m 34, married, no kids (planning soon). Loooooooooooooong way to go.

Thx for sharing.

I don’t really think of it in those terms. Technically, probably already have enough money, but like my job. Maxing our my pension will probably be a trigger though.

$10m(not including primary residence) so I can live by the 5% withdrawal rule very comfortably and not be at risk of the firm going under for whatever reason and ruining my retirement. Any pension on top of that is just a bigger boat. It’s also a good amount where my children and grandchildren will be set for life via a trust providing for basic housing and a killer education.

McK1’s comment sounds moronic and insecure (trying to show off thoughtfulness by assuming others haven’t done so implicitly). Hmmm, a McK partner at 45 (assuming normal trajectory) makes about $1M and after taxes/expenses would never come close to the earlier estimates (most likely undershoot projected income levels).

like

No my friend. I am mid thirties. Live within my means and invest a lot in multiple asset classes. My current CAGR for the past 10 years is about 21%. This has dropped recently because I took hit in March and didn’t invest back much. BTW - how did you reach the conclusion that McK folks at 45 make about 1M? I must know at least 50 partners and at least 70-80% are less than 40 years old making more than 1M per year.

$20M

$10M should be fine for me across primary home , rentals and other investments . $4M+ now and about 15 more years I want to work at the most . Reality is that I don’t think that much will be needed since we don’t really mind going down significantly in life style even before retirement .

It’s interesting that majority of you are talking about a $$ number and not a combination of retirement age and $$ number. I prepared my wealth plan with expected life, major goals (like private schools for kids), yearly expenses in retirement, nominal % gains on investments etc. and then came to a retirement age of 45 years. I track it rigorously and due to Covid I think I will push out the retirement age by an year.

What’s your number at 45?

Serious question - is there a reverse FIRE strategy? I like the idea of saving and retiring early, but the one hiccup I see (and sorry if this is grim) is if you die earlier than expected. I’d be worried that I would minimize lifestyle and fun for retirement at 50 but I’d die at 49. How about a way to work 9 months out of the year and retire/travel/relax for 3 months? This way you guaranteed your dreams/etc. are fulfilled

What is the partner compensation like at BDO? Base/equity as well as pension. I heard there is 5 years as fixed partner and then 10 as variable partner before you can earn pension. Say you make partner at 40, so can’t earn pension til 55. If you retire at 55 does that mean all you have is whatever you’ve contributed to 401k or otherwise saved? Or is there a lifetime salary if you’ve been partner a certain duration?

Should I try to sign the 185 offer and try to see if I even get offer with MS and let the poly play out or should I just not worry about it and sign the current offer? I am pretty sure the compensation from MS is great.

Is there an easy/efficient way to figure out how much you've contributed to vs earned in your Roth accounts? I started contributing >20 years ago to my employer's Roth 401k and have rolled it over to a Roth IRA and moved it between multiple custodians, e.g. Fidelity, Vanguard, UBS, Personal Capital, etc. It is unclear to me how much I contributed vs how much I earned by investing it.

The purpose of doing this is I want to use $10K of it, but want to prove that the $10K is from my contribution.
