I’ve heard of that happening, especially with startups where things change quickly. It’s frustrating, but I wouldn’t jump straight to them fishing for info, it’s usually more about shifting priorities or budget. Still doesn’t make it any less annoying though.

That’s a good point. I’ve always worked at larger companies so it seemed silly to suddenly not fill a role you’re actively interviewing someone for, but this makes more sense now. Thanks!
Your guess is 70% right, people do this. They just want to get some insights from you which they can use. Them saying you would've been their first choice if they still needed someone for the role is just a rub on the back while declining you.

Exactly! They could’ve just left that part out. It’s draining to go through interviewing 5 times just to hear “nevermind”
I recently had this experience. I was contacted about a role at a small company and shared I wasn’t interested. Soon after, they came back to tell me the role had been upgraded and the compensation was much higher, so I interviewed. They didn’t ask anything about me, it was all about my processes. I told my wife every answer they were blown away and took notes so I’m either the perfect person for this or they just wanted to get some ideas out of me. Soon after the interview I was told the job was put on hold and never heard back.

That’s so frustrating! At least I’m not the only one, but it’s really sad companies don’t care to waste our time and hope

What a sorry way to do things.

Exactly! Seems like a company I wouldn’t want to work at anyway.
Yes, the role wasn’t a perfect fit for me so I didn’t mind. Funny enough 3 years later another role (one level up) opened up with that company and I got it. So in my case it was genuine, may be an outlier.

I’m glad it worked out for you in the end! You don’t always hear a positive outcome so it’s nice to hear.
Agreed with some others here
Absolutely! Been there! Very hurtful. But just remember it is psychological and make sure not to take it personal but just give thanks as something better is bound to happen. Have zero regrets to any new company that doesn’t value you, your experience and your time and let them go; their loss😊
