I don’t live in BK ( going from BX to Harlem soon) but I the vibes are definitely different especially if you’re considering social as an aspect. There’s also a difference between West and East Harlem .
West Harlem is not necessarily cheaper than BK . Social life on the west can be good as long as you have a circle nearby and if you’re willing to travel . I would say stay in BK if you can .

Thank you ! I would recommend West Harlem given you’re coming from BK and still want that social aspect .
Best wishes on you decision ! Would love to connect - I’m also 27 in the city , born in NYC
If a semblance of financial responsibility is a goal then take it from someone who did not make that a goal earlier in their life 🤦🏽♀️ like I should have..and put it to the forefront. The ability to “save” money is one that many people don’t have whether by their own choices or out of their control completely. (Full disclosure: mine is about 50/50 and I’m 37)
My only objective concern is that your views on nightlife are gonna change soon/quickly if they already haven’t. So maybe trying to preserve the nightlife experience is not one you’d want to prioritize when making a decision about your move.
In my experience/opinion all of NYC (and most of the surrounding areas honestly) are becoming unaffordable for the middle class And anything that is affordable is complete trash or close to it.
Tysm for the insight! Definitely a few things to think about.
I did this although I also kept an apartment and lived in Los Angeles half of the year. Some would argue I was never a New Yorker although I had that arrangement for 8 years. I went from Williamsburg, to Park Slope, to Bedstuy, to West Harlem for the same reason you described. I had a room in a HUGE 4 bedroom apt with folks that worked on cruise lines (read: gone for months at a time) so I only had one constant roommate that didn’t work in the travel industry. I found Harlem quite nice, great food, and the commute to things wasn’t terrible. It beat my short stint in Washington Heights by a long mile.
There’s too many variables to consider here…and I promise you I’m not being facetious:
1. How old are you?;
2. Are you a NY/NYC transplant? (someone not originally from NY or NYC);
3. What is your current occupation status?;
4. What personal goals do you have set for yourself in the next 4 years?;
These may seem irrelevant or circumstantial but some of these answers could be really important to your future and future plans. BUT I have to admit..”you live and you learn” is a phrase I took for granted when I was young and single and quite frankly silly (in hindsight)….
And just for the record: I’m from the Bronx born and raised and left the Bronx for suburbia outside of NYC almost 10 years ago (for a myriad of different reasons and “important” factors) and depending on the day I have regrets or it was the best decision for me…
I’m 27, a transplant (though I moved to NY at 16), currently employed. In terms of goals, no specific ones honestly but some semblance of financial stability.
