Hey I’m looking to land another controls position in automation. I used to do intermediate level PLC programming and troubleshooting at my previous employers until personal life circumstances changed.

I have been a multi-craft/automation mechanic for 10 years and have a 2 year degree in computer engineering. This field is my passion as it actually stretches me to grow faster than maintenance tech jobs. Any tips on skillsets and certifications to be considered for a controls engineer/tech?

I was a controls engineer at Cataler for a year and done really good at HMI programs, tracking and capturing data, adding ladder logic to current programs for cycle time improvements and scrap reduction. I see a lot of jobs only offer these roles to 4-year degree applicants. But if I was able to get one job with a 2-year degree than I know that there’s something I can do to be more desirable. Which is why I’m pursuing the “ISA: certified controls system technician” and would like feedback on how to increase my opportunities with certifications and skillsets rather than a 4-year.
