How do you "sign" a verbal offer. Absolutely say nothing until everything is in writing and good to go.
Wait until process is complete. What if something flags during background check and they pull the offer? You'd then be unemployed since you've already given notice at EY. Do you think EY would take you back when you say "oops just kidding, don't really want to give my two weeks"?
^Not petty thinking at all. That's called good business. First rule of business is to look out for yourself first. If you're looking out for others first that's called charity. :)
Sorry... I signed the offer letter, contingent upon the completion of a background check. My question is when do people generally give notice? While the background check is pending or wait until the process is complete.
Wait for the completed background check! It's a conditional offer until its really an offer. Give your current employer notice when you clear the process. The Big4 do pretty deep due diligence and if you have an old boss who disses you, they may pull the offer.
I would wait
I would wait... But I caved in and gave notice to my partner 2.5 weeks in advance because I was put on a project that needed me to travel internationally and would impact the project significantly.
That is nice of you to do. The reason I say wait is because they look out for themselves . They meaning companies - so it's like we are trying to help them out but they would screw us over in a second. I know that's petty thinking but just my thought as well
Same thing happened to me, I wrote an email to my new employer telling them I wouldn't be joining unless they approved my background. Let's just say that got through the red tape real fast. #Approved!
@pwc1 - what do you mean you wouldn't join unless they approved?
Yep! But it wasn't a bluff. Not going to quit a perfectly good job to find out I didn't pass a background check!
Pwc1--- ohhh I see what you are saying! Makes sense for sure! Completely agree
I don't understand. Isn't the approval the passing of the background check?
You can literally be at training when you get word that you didn't pass your background check!
B4 don't give those types of references. All they will do is confirm your employment dates. They won't release ratings or give any commentary as to your performance for liability reasons.
You never though - they might ask people about you and if they don't hear great things they could pull it?
Doesn't happen. How would they go about this in practice? Just cold call everyone in the practice to see if they worked with you? B4 offices are huge. Also if they offered you a position that means that they've interviewed you, were impressed with you and want to offer you a job. You think they'd pull that offer based on a non-verifiable, subjective opinion from a random manager/SM who they happened to get in touch with? I have a hard time believing that the new company would trust this random reference over their own internal evaluations.
They do that actually if they know people. They did this with my friend. Everyone spoke highly about her though but yes they do this lol if they know the people.
You don't know that it "doesn't happen". You could say you don't "think" it happens but you don't know for sure that it doesn't. It's frustrating when people try to act so sure but they don't actually know. Were you a recruiter before?
Anything is possible. We are speaking in generalities here and for the vast majority of positions this doesn't occur. I participate in recruiting for my firm and I'm close with the director of recruiting. I know for a fact that they don't randomly call people they know at a B4 to see if that person happens to know the interviewee. We make our decisions based off of the interviews. If someone is a shitty candidate that's difficult to hide in an interview.
