Hi all. I’d love to hear from those of you who are in positions that pay well enough to tackle student loans, while also being something you genuinely enjoy and don’t dread having to do everyday. I’d love to know what you enjoy about the practice area. Thank you in advance ❤️

I think this is going to be super individual. I am an m&a associate in big law in NY and I love it. I make around $400k + bonus. My firm pays market. I am a single mom but outsource a lot of my household management. I am working to pay off my loans and, pre-divorce proceedings, I’d put my whole bonus amount into my debt. Now I need it to pay for my divorce. But I still make monthly payments to my student loan debt!

Less to do with practice area and more to do with budgeting, but I would always take half of my bonus and put it towards my student loans, then a quarter to savings and a quarter to splurge (I did just earn myself a bonus after all).

The regulatory groups in big law tend to be pretty gentle by big law standards and intellectually stimulating. I’ve really enjoyed my time as an antitrust associate at a v50.

Good to know, thank you!

I work in labor and employment. I started at an insurance defense firm and hated it (long hours, crap pay). I lateraled to big law as a second year. I liked the people I worked with and the work itself was pretty interesting. But I couldn't handle the long hours, weekend work, and I just really hate billing my time.

I ended up going in-house still doing L&E and it is fantastic. It was a pay cut from big law, but I'm c/o 2020 and my base salary is $200k with 20% bonus, so I think it's a pretty great deal. I really love the people I work with. The work is interesting, I handle a lot of internal investigations (you get all the tea 🍵), review/update policies, manage medical and religious accommodation requests, etc.

I'm also greatful that I actually feel good about the work I do. I genuinely feel like we try to do the right thing and we try to do right by our employees. That definitely isn't the case at all companies.

L&E at a big 4 firm. The second I paid off my loans I moved in house - took a tiny pay cut (25k) and I really love my job now

We do have a lawyer that we can meet with but they're also not an expert and turnarounds are always very long so not as helpful as I'd hoped.
