I’m currently working in-house in London, but I’m exploring options to increase my earnings and broaden my practice. I’m considering approaching certain US firms in London to express interest in potential opportunities.

For me,salary is key but it’s also about the opportunity to expand my technical exposure and develop my practice further. I don’t feel i am getting that in house.

I’d really welcome any thoughts or experiences others might be willing to share. Thanks.

What states have a big law market where I can get the most out of my dollar? Also currently work for CA firm, if I move to another state does the state tax rate switch to where I live?

Lateral that just went through first bonus season with the firm. Not in a major market but workload is comparable to major markets. Surprised at how low the bonus was. I received solid reviews and my annualized hours were well above the requirement. Should I approach anyone about this? Wondering if it is worth addressing or if it could compromise my standing. When your seniors aren’t motivated and pulling their weight, it shows and demotivates you. It’s a domino effect. How do you handle these situations? The senior pushes every single thing down and it’s clear to everyone this person could care less. Makes me not care and not want to do anything either…

Just started in Biglaw as a first year - one of the partners made a passing remark that he couldn’t remember my PQE but thinks I’m “the same as X associate”. Went on LinkedIn and saw that X associate is a third year. How do I gently correct this misconception in a future conversation?

I lateraled into a niche practice group in Sept 2021. I also have a 1 year old and have been mostly remote since I started - but have been keeping busy tracking towards 2400-2500 hours. That said getting to know people only remote has been kind of awkward at times (email only can be tough to decipher) although as a working mom the pros vastly outweigh the cons. Yesterday my main partner asked me to come in Thursday bc he will be there and set a time to meet. Is this good/bad?? kind of nervous!

Am I the only person who gets skeptical when a recruiter calls, like did my law firm send you to see if I’m interested in making a move? 🤨 I may be paranoid, though. Lol

How do you manage competing interests during a singing or closing? I’m working on a closing scheduled for this week (obviously everything needs to be done asap) and while I’ve told folks on my other deals that this closing is very busy, I’ve gotten really snarky responses and have been told that I’m taking too long to respond to stuff that (in my opinion) is not urgent on these other deals. Everyone seems to think that their task is more important than an actual closing. Advice?

Midlaw M&A/Corporate 6th year in LCOL city. Have potential opportunity to go in house for public fintech co. doing substantially similar work. Comp similar to what I make now, but vague on upside. Not necessarily ready to move (generally like my firm and group), but nervous my in-house marketability will decrease the longer I stay at a firm. Any thoughts appreciated.

Just graduated and took the bar. Will be starting in the litigation practice group at a Big Law firm in the fall. I want to use my time off to set myself up for success. Any books I should read? Skills I should learn (e.g., excel)? Other advice? Thank you all.
