It can take 3 years of exposure before an allergy develops, but I agree it’s weird it started when you moved. Have you tried apoquel or cytopoint?
One thought - has your dog been exposed to cats before? Was there a cat in the apt previously?
I didn’t know about the exposure time! We moved to NE from CA in June 2023. She got her 💉 rabies a couple months before that. No cart that I know of. Just a guy that lives there for one month before moving apartments and the airmen is brand new. Neighbor below has a cat but they don’t interact.
Have the apartment complex clean all vents and change ALL filters ASAP! You may need to pay a company yourself for really clean vents.
Is there an allergen test for dogs?
Yes ish. Hair follicle tests aren’t as accurate. Blood tests are a bit better but can have lots of false positives or negatives. Cost is $600-$1500 plus immunotherapy about $100/month and not guaranteed to work. Skin allergy testing would be best but they want to put her under and she’s 12 so not a great idea.
Any chance you can have the carpets in your new place cleaned again without using chemicals (like, just get them steam cleaned)?
Possibly but I’m not a fan of how they clean around here. 🥴 I do have a steamer with a carpet attachment but it won’t be a deep clean
Have you tried changing her food to a different protein? I know that the vet said that it’s environmental but I would still try changing her food since other options are so expensive or challenging to implement. My dog is highly allergic to chicken and recently developed an allergy to his salmon based food. He’s now on a hydrolyzed protein food (prescription). He’s only been on it a few days but I’m hopeful that he’ll be ok.
My mom and sister have both had good experiences with putting their dogs on apoquel but it’s expensive.
Is not food allergies. Dermatologist confirmed this as well. And just as a precaution I did try different proteins and nothing changed. All of my research and trial and error has also confirmed it’s not food related. She hasn’t rated kibble in over half her life.
I want to avoid aboquel and cytopoint. Cytopoint made her incontinent (vet told me it would help her eye heal faster and I should have said no). I want to get down to the root cause and what suddenly caused this out of nowhere at 12 years old and don’t want to mask the symptoms since we are already temporarily doing that with steroids.
My dogs looked like that and had dozens of tests by the first vet. I was at the end of my rope when I took him to a different vet. The 2nd vet immediately figured out the first one had not found the problem even though they allegedly tested for it. Sarcoptic mange....one of my dogs was basically blind from it. I had been told it was allergies in the beginning. Special diets, special bathes...all kinds of medications. It was a terrible experience for my babies and me 😡
I’m so sorry to hear that! She doesn’t have Sarcoptic mange and has been tested by two different vets and a Derm for it.
