Find new job, then go above bosses head and ask for his position, if answer is no leave
I am on the look out for something else but it has to be the right position.
Do you feel like anything is going on behind the scenes? They might be getting ready to transition out, but seniors aren’t ready to say anything yet. That’s a tough one. You could very well be next in line, but is that a few months or years down the road?
I am not sure. He has it good in this company. But he is always saying he hates it but his work ethic is poor as in he never wants to do anything. I know he is insecure since I joined because my knowledge is extensive compared to his. He just talks rubbish in meetings to sound good, but he doesn’t do that very well. I know a lot of people don’t like how he works and mock him. People are negative about him but everyone likes working with me because I am pragmatic and solution based.
"Yikes, that doesn't sound like a good situation to be in at all. I would either start looking for something else, or ask for more pay because you are doing the roles of everyone. It wouldn't hurt to gather offers though.
I would find a new role before leaving if you decide to leave. The in-house counsel job market is brutal with most searching from 6 months to 1 year. With that said, I like the comment to find a new role and try to get his role before you leave.
I think the good thing in this situation is that you’ve proven to yourself and to the organisation that you are capable of senior/leadership roles all in less than 1 full year. That’s pretty impressive. If you do end up looking you can use your current experience to your advantage. The fact you said you are able to work well with others says a lot about your character! No workplace is perfect but the experience and character you’ll bring to your next workplace will be high valuable based on what you have been able to manage in your current organisation. All the best!!
Good luck! You’ll do great! :)
*** I’m effectively running the function without any formal change in title or structure, which doesn’t sit well.
I joined for longevity / pension risk transfer experience and have had close to a year now. There are other in-house roles (more general corporate insurance) that pay significantly more.
Would you:
Stay for the niche experience and added responsibility?
Or move for higher pay and a more structured setup?
Appreciate any thoughts.***
