Hi! I’m in training to become the Director of Marketing at the startup I’ve worked at for the past few years. Any tips for how to manage the team’s capacity and work with a lean, low-budget marketing team?

As you are standing up a team as a new leader you probably want to do a few things:
- Meet with everyone 1:1 to understand what they’re currently working on and get to know them, these should probably be weekly after your initial one to manage performance and do a check-in
- begin having a standup, maybe twice a week for 20 minutes (no longer than 30 min) - this will help you understand how people are prioritizing their work
- with the information you gather, create a spreadsheet so you can map out what projects are currently in-flight, how much time they’re taking and where capacity may exist on the team.
— if your company has a digital PM tool, that can work even better for managing capacity (i.e Monday)

I think anything is better than a spreadsheet. I’ve never used it bc of the kinds of companies I work at but it has really caught on.

When I interviewed they told me I was not required to recruit but now I’m required to upload 50 “My Relationships” every certain amount of months where other recruiters can technically go after my contacts and recruit them and also am expected to invite potential networking to events and through the beaker model. Is this required? I feel forced and I’ve only been here for less than a month and I’m not loving this approach.

Few tips to improve your visual design skills

- Learn Typography: Typography is essential because 60-70% of user interfaces are about written content displayed in a meaningful way.

- Learn Layout and Composition: You don’t need to be pixel perfect, but if you place labels 10px above inputs, you must do that consistently across your whole design.

- Learn Color: Color doesn't need to be complex. Understand how colors interact with each other and learn how color can set moods.
